I Like Chicken Butts...

Since I'm Cameraless in Indiana, I thought I'd post some chicken photos that I took last fall and never managed to post.

Aren't chickens the most beautiful things?

I don't know that there will be a day in the rest of my life that I won't have chickens. They are so entertaining. There's just something about them that relaxes me, grounds me and makes me feel that everything is going to be ok. They are cheaper than psychiatrists and Zoloft. I can tell them my darkest secrets and they just cluck away, and I realize, in the grand scheme of things, my problems aren't so big.

Just the other night I was talking to Glenco...and I said....'whatta ya think about selling this place and living on the road in the Squirrel...we can just go State Park to State Park and follow the weather. We can go to Canada!" I was willing to give up the garden, the crazy cooking, even my new loom. I was feeling excited about the prospect. Then he said 'You'd have to give up the chickens'. "Ah forget it" I said as I rolled over and went to sleep. Not happenin'.

I love their fluffy butts...if you aren't careful that is all you will end up with....588 pictures of fluffy chicken derrieres, trust me, I have about that many.

You'll be happy to know that Helen is well, and is happily living back in the chicken coop. She was one happy hen when we put her back. I was a little offended....I mean, hello.....Helen? The diaper? The cornbread? The bath and blow dry? You prefer a dirt floor to that?
Thanks Helen.

  1. ...you are one crazy lady. I am going to have to make a few phone calls to make sure those border guards don't let you into Canada. I'm not sure we'd survive!!!

Just love your blog and so look forward to each post!!!

  3. Jayme you crack me up! I guess I have never given chickens much thought (other than I love to eat them....oooh don't tell them I said that.) I love your sense of humor and I loved your post about Glenco!

    Hugs,
    LeAnn:)

  4. The pics of your chickens are awesome! I have a small flock of 13 and JUST LOVE 'EM. Like you I never knew they could be such fun and have such different personalities.
Love that I found your blog, too. BTW-that Glenco is a great find. My DH is very much like him - seems he can do just about anything. Looks at me kinda crazy when I come up with some of my ideas, but helps me achieve them just the same.

  5. I guess you can take the chicken out of the coop, but you can't eve take the coop out of the chicken.

  6. It's nice to see that there are others out there besides me that like the rear-end-views of animals. Whether it's a feathery chicken butt, or the fluffy tail of a persian cat, there's just something that you gotta love.

What is that adorable green building in the background of the one photo? It's cute beyond belief! I'd love to see more.

  7. Hubby and I were talking last night about our chickens....wondering "What is it" that we enjoy so much, just watching how busy they are? They are always talking, very animated, following us around, begging for food. It's peaceful and entertaining and just satisfying to have them pecking and scratching around the property all day. I'm with you on the fluffy butt thing:-)

  8. Jayme, you could never give up your life for the "road scene". It sounds exciting but it does get old quickly.
Not to mention poor Helen without you. Glad you got rid of those thoughts!

I fully understand how you feel about the chickens as I have a 100 lb American Bulldog that I feel the same way about. If she could talk and tell all my inner thoughts and secrets I've shared with her, everyone would disown me. :) She brings me comfort for some reason.

I so enjoyed the blog about Glenco. I'm glad you shared the fact he's shy because I was beginning to think he was strange. :) :) Have a beautiful week-end. Stay warm!!

  9. You crack me up, you really do. And now you have me thinking about chickens......the only thing is...if I keep chickens I will never be able to eat them again. This would be my fourth go around with being a vegetarian....and I always cave into a nice roasted chicken with fresh sage and lemon and little baby potatoes and carrots roasted alongside........what am I gonna do????

  10. I have been stalking..ummm... READING. Your blog for a little while now, I just love it, you crack me up and its a good day when you start it out with a laugh! We also rear chickens and I would have to agree that they are so much fun, our girls have their own personalities who would have thought chickens would be so entertaining? Thanks for the laugh(s). PS. I have your blog on my sidebar now, for quick access to new posts, lol!

I love the little garden shed in your yard.

  21. If I still had our chickens, I'd send them all to you girlfriend. Glad you love them! I just like to eat them and their eggs. LOL.
Thanks for all the smiles today...I needed it.

  22. Ha! You sound just like my sissy... she loves her chickens too and laughs at their antics all the time. I think they are pretty but really otherwise can't get serious about a chicken. They peck too much.

  23. I do love me some chicken butt! And, you're right, if not careful, the whole computer would be loaded down with chicken photos! Cause they're so dang cute!

  24. As a fellow chicken mama, yep I totally understand about the gazillion pics of fluffy butts, LOL!

What breeds do you have? I see many and they are all sooo beautiful!

My flock is miserable all cooped up for the winter... it's -24F with windchill since yesterday and won't get any warmer until next week.

    Sigh.

  25. I just love buff orpingtons. We have three, err, two and one that was supposed to be a buff, but kinda seems like a cross between a buff and an auracana. Looks like you might have one similar. We also have two auracanas, two golden laced wyandottes, a golden speckled hamburg for eight ladies total. Just love our girls :)

  26. ohhh. those lovely chicken pantaloons... I was always surprised how clean our chickens kept theirs. We always gave them plenty of sawdust to take dustbaths in. They would just roll like a dog in it, and flip it up on themselves with their wings, like a seal flipping sand on itself. We just loved to watch them. Then they would stand up and shake it all out and be fluffed up like a Phyllis Diller hairdo... LOL!!!!! And looked as clean as a whistle. Amazing... sigh...Reading your posts does make me miss having "the ladies"... I am determined to have some more one day. I hesitate because of Kobe my renegade. (rescue Golden/Collie mix) Oh what FOWL thoughts he would have if we had chickens in the pen again... I would have to reinforce the castle-coop and put more outer fencing around it and I think a MOAT! hee hee. So I'll keep dreamin'...you keep postin'...and we'll see what happens.
Fluffs in the air, Fluffs in the air...Lookin like a fowl with your fluffs in the air...Feathers floating here, Feathers floating there, Lookin like a hen with your butt in the air... hee hee hee...
Have a great weekend Jayme. **Your hubby sure was a cutie pie little boy.

  27. Hey Jayme,

Love the pictures of your chickens booties. Let me just tell you that when you have a rooster around, their booties aren't quite so pretty and fluffy. They lose lots and lots of their feathers and then all you see is skin. It's quite disturbing. We are so enjoying our chickens also. I like to just sit and watch them forage around.

  28. (Sighhhh...) Aren't they beautiful? I never tire of looking at chickens either. Is there a special gene for this syndrome?

  29. I just browsed your chicken archives to see what color eggs the girls lay....I love the pretty blue/green ones. How many eggs do you get each day? Hey, you could sell eggs on Etsy!
Picture number six is an awesome profile shot, and she's such a pretty color. I wish I lived next door and could buy eggs...fresh from the girls!

  30. Jayme,

I am sure if you got your creative juices flowing you could design and Glenco could build a mini coop (er) one one wheels that is towed behind the squirell.
I could just see the headlines now "Chickens loose on interstate and woman calling herself the coop keeper desperately searching for Helen. Details at 11."

  31. Oh your chickens are so pretty! Love them all! You take such good pictures of them. Right now there's snow on the ground, and my hens won't dare leave there house. It's much warmer in there than outside!! I hope to get some good pictures of them this spring!!!

  32. Well, I guess you can take the chicken out of the pen but you can't take the pen out of the chicken. Your girls are lovely!

  33. Oh my ... I've posted about my love of chicken butts as well! Now there are two of us. :)

We had chickens when I grew up but apparently I never bothered to pay attention to them. I never knew how soft and fluffy they could be.

I too, can't imagine a life without them. Go fluffy bottoms!

  36. Love your chicken pics. We had chickens on our farm when I was a kid and I loved them. But we moved to the city and now I only have the memories but now I get to see yours! So glad Helen is better now, bet you are having Helen withdrawal, LOL. She is such a pretty chicken.

Keep up the great posts, you are great!!

  37. Last night they had a show on the History Channel about the egg. From family farms to organic ranches and commercial grow-out operations. We used to have chickens and they roamed free like yours. Those were the best eggs! Sadly, I cannot have chickens. Neighbors and POA rules prevent me from having my heart's desire. So, I will have to be satisfied with pictures on your blog, you can't post too many to suit me!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Definitely beautiful...I'm going to ogle yours for awhile, until I can have my own. Bring on the chicken butt photos, please and thank you.

  39. Jayme,
Post away on those photos. I can't get enough of the chickens. I can relate to the "maybe we could take our show on the road" thoughts. I get all excited by the prospect of starting life over somewhere...only to realize here is where I probably belong. Although, ya never know! Have a great week!

  40. We are hoping to buy a place with a few acres so we can have chickens. My husband is a poultry man from way back. He managed a breeding farm and hatchery in Spain way back when. Then did the same in Maine when we first married. I worked in the hatchery debeaking the chicks. When I was growing up in Georgia, my father had laying hens and my sister and I washed eggs by hand. This project was to earn money to send my brother to Georgia Tech.

You mentioned you have a loom? Would love to know about that. I have a floor loom that folds. I used to belong to the Maine Guild of Spinners and Weavers.
