I Got a Can, and I Got a Plan

Valentine's Day has always been hit or miss for me. I have good intentions, but usually it fizzles by the time the day gets here. This year, for some reason, I'm all up in Valentine's face.
Craftin', cookin' and lovin'.
I think I should make this a new tradition.
'Valentime's Day' is a real holiday.

Here's a great little craft that you can make in a heartbeat.
Best thing about it, it uses what you'd otherwise throw away!

I've been saving cans for a while now, cause I just hate to throw them away. I usually bake bread in them, but I think this is a great idea.

Imagine the possibilities if you would.
You could do these for all of the holidays!
Endless ideas, I tell you.

I just painted the cans with some acrylic paint. Spray paint would have been awesome, but I haven't nary.

I gave the cans about three coats, allowing them to dry in between coats. While they were drying, I searched out some vintagy Valentines online, by using Google images.
I searched 'Vintage Valentine Postcards'
At the bottom of this post, I have them so you can cut and paste if you'd like!

I had to scale them somewhat with the printer options to make them the right size.
Then I decoupaged them on. I like the word 'decoupage'.
Somehow I didn't get a photo of me doing that, but ya'll know it's just smearing some glue on the back of paper right?

After the decoupage dried, I gave all the cans a coat of satin spray. I glittered a couple of them.
I think I might sand the edges lightly of the ones I didn't glitter, just to age them a little more.
I feel so crafty.

What to do with them now?
Come back tomorrow and I'll show you what I'm going to fill them with!

Here's some of the cute little vintage Valentine's I found:

Awwwww......so cute!

I really liked this one, but didn't use it. There's just 'something' about it that I really like.

This one ended up being my favorite on a pink can. Very vintagy and frosty looking.

This one just flat cracked me up.

Cupid's Message. Really? What message does roasting someone's heart over an open fire send?

A rather haunting Valentine.

The freakiest Valentine I've ever seen.
I'd break up with whomever sent me this one!

  1. ooo you crafty thing, you. What brilliance. Would those be something for this weekend?

That last one just totally creeped me out. Totally.

  2. Those are seriously cute!! I am anxious to see what you do with them. I like your thinking, Valentines Day is a Holiday, Valentines Day is a Holiday.......
    lol you got me thinking.

  3. Cute cute cute! I love your favorite and the cupid one right below it. Sittin on pins and needles waitin to see what Cutie Pie you is gonna fill those cans with! OOOO I wanna be your valentine girlfriend! :-)

  4. Wow, that last one IS creepy! Great craft idea though.

  5. Your too much, honestly, does the talent ever end? I'm so jealous. Great job as always. Love ya, me

  6. Just found your blog via flowerpatchfarmgirl, and I'm cracking up all through the first post. Can't wait to read on. I'm already loving your style.
I too have found myself kickin' some valentine butt this year for some reason despite past years full of fizzled good intentions. Those cans are lookin' good!
    From a fellow Hoosier farmgirl.

  7. Ya, that red headed creepy kid in the last one would give anyone nightmares! YIKES.. the others are super caaaute!!

    The Blue Ridge Gal

  8. Jayme...I am so jealous of your creativity and talent. If you plan to fill those cans with yummies that you make please send one to me down here in Florida. Pleeeease! Love the vintage valentines too. You are absolutely too amazing for one gal. Can you clone yourself inside of me? Ha. It's rainy outside today, and I am not getting anything done except for 2 loads of laundry. I have to clean, iron, and do some cooking, and do NOT want to. I need an overhaul. Ha.

  9. Love the cans... can't wait to see what you do with them. I have always been terrible at remembering Valentines Day. My mom was so good at this.I wonder why I drop the ball every February?

I have a ton of early 1900's valentine's that my grandmother saved. What to do with them?

  10. Cute idea! I'm wondering...are we filling these beautiful containers with Valentine's or goodies?

Side note here: I sent you an e-mail a few days ago. Guess what? When I was looking at my e-mail today, I noticed there were two pieces of "spam" mail. One was the e-mail I sent you...noted as undeliverable. When I double checked I'd miss typed your e-mail address! lol I would have expected that from me last week...but not this week! Oh well...when I read it over today it was like "old news"...so I'll just wait and surprise you another day! :)

  11. C U T E ! Great crafty idea. Lov ethe vintage valentines too.. Have a great day.

  12. Cute, cute, cute!! Can't wait to see what goes inside :) -Tammy

  13. So cute! And thanks for sharing those wonderful old cards! Can't wait to see what you do with these lovelies.

  14. Man, are you crafty! Those vintage valentines are adorable, and of course the glitter is a perfect finish. Good job!

  15. I'm not so much into crafty right now...just gettin' back on my feet after surgery earlier this month...BUT....I am thinkin' I might make those heart shaped rosemary scones I saw on Food Network this week! YUM!

  16. Such a cute idea! These cards are a riot. The last one looks like he dropped a hand grenade in front of the bench (Be my valentine or we will both die!) Perfect card for stalkers. (Or is it a turtle?)
The other one had me laughing hard - did you see the hand written message on it? It says: Did you say you
preferred brunettes? It looks like little Oprah!

  17. Love this idea! It is adorable. Where do you buy glitter spray? I would love to try this idea. Can't wait to see what you do with the cans.

  18. Those are just too cute. I'll have to keep that idea in mind for next year. Might not have time to borrow it this year...
Can't wait to see the finished project!

  19. I have a "thing" about metal!!! I also collect cans for who knows what but I still love them. For christmas I had the folks in our school kitchen save those big veggie and fruit cans. We decopaged them with wrapping paper ( I just used watered down school glue) and then we shredded more of the wrapping paper and used it for filler. The kids put their 5 home made ornaments in the cans and gave them for Christmas presents....I must say they were darling!
We also discovered "American Pickers" just last night and it was a hoot! We also watched that pawn shop show but I liked the Pickers better! Would that not be so much fun.
Glad you are feeling better and almost back to your old self!

  20. The last post was mine, sorry I did not notice hubby was signed in until after I posted it!

  21. So what did you do with the cans once you were finished with them? A nice candle in them would work for me. When I was little, I INSISTED that Valentine's Day was Valentime's Day because it was the time of year for sending a Valentime. Thanks for posting the vintage Valentine's. Didn't some of them remind you of the punch out ones that we used to get when we were kids? :)

  22. Your commentary on that last stalkerish valentine cracked me OUP.

    That's right - Oup.

    I have no idea...

I'm loving your craft, Marty! I even saved my diced tomato can during dinner prep, per your instructions from yesterday.

Only...no printer here. What's a girl to do??

Also - I'm doing another swoony craft tomorrow. Will report back.

  23. Love the vintage Valentine cards you found on line. I used copied vintage Valentine pictures this year also. Oh goodie...I can't wait to see what goes in the cans. Will tomorrow ever get here. But for now...American Idol.

  24. The boy in the last valentine looks like he's channeling the devil himself! Last year I picked up some reproductions similar to these at Von's down by campus. I should have directed you there! Next time you come down, I want to take you (& Aaron) around & show you my favorite places. Did you like XXX? Did you hav the Drew Brees burger?

  25. So cute! I can't wait to see the rest of the story. I haven't managed to put anything together for Vday this year. Guess I better get off my duff.

  26. I am still procrastinating, but now I need to get MOVING on this! That last one, too creepy for words!

  27. I love those valentines...I'm thinking of the twins using these for their class parties...I know, the clock's ticking. My curiosity is piqued, and I'm staying tuned. : )

    Be well ~Andrea~

  28. Up in Valentine's face...that's my quote for the day. You are all full of craftiness. I love the cans. And I still have not gotten over the wood floors in the dollhouse. OMG- can you come do my kitchen? ;)

  29. I think this is a great idea! I used to save cans and anything else I could find to make crafts with my daughter when I homeschooled her. For some crazy reason I still save them, even though she is a freshman in college! Now I know why I have been saving them - you gave me the inspiration to pull them out of the recycling bin (which never goes to the recycling center)! Love your site.

  30. Gettin' caught up with a week's worth of blogs...so glad to hear your Dental Incident is over and you're feeling better.

That last creepy Valentine is chilling indeed, but it's the Cupid one that reaally freaks me out - two Cupids cooking someone's heart????! What's the 'message' - love me or I'll cut out your heart and eat it? Hands down the most awful Valentine I've ever seen. Might make a good illustration for a Stephen King book...

  31. I think Im gonna get all me older minded nippers making these for their girl/boy friends :) the possibility of filling them is endless ....... fanks for a brill idea

  32. What a wonderful way of recycling!!! I love these cans and can just see them filled with kisses and other little goodies!

  33. What a neat idea with the cans! I think I might try that. I love your blog, it is a good source of daily laughs and inspiration. :) And thanks for commenting on MY blog..it's somewhat new and it's nice to know I'm writing for someone! :)

  34. is that chuckie on the last card?

  35. LOL! Cupid's message is: "My Heart's on Fire for you!"

    As for the last one...
    Absolutely CREEPY!

Never mind how I got here.
It's Chicken Thirty of a mornin', gotta go!

    Have a blessed day Jayme!

Thanks so much for leaving a comment!
