Bringing Home Baby

In lieu of my pain and drug induced stupor, I thought I'd pull out some old posts from when I first started blogging and share with you.

Here is a post from May 2009, when I first got 'the girls'. Now, one of these chickens is Stubs. The rest - God Rest Their Souls -
Raccoons.

Allow me to introduce you to my new girls! Last Monday, after the 'cat'astrophe, we decided to take a ride up to Hobart to Karp's Garden Center and Feed Store (and then of course on to Bass Pro - my personal heaven). Didn't PLAN on getting chickens that day, because the house isn't ready yet. (Um, actually it isn't even started yet) Leave it to me to do things completely ass backwards. BUT, it was raining out, and it seemed a good a day as any to get them. Come to think of it, sometimes I HAVE to do things ass backwards to get anything done.

Here they are getting nestled into their new temporary house. I'm keeping them on the enclosed front porch for now, in my old rabbit cage, with a heat lamp on them. I'd like to name them, but they all look the same. :-/

I had wanted a few different breeds, but encountered the problem of mail order. In order to mail order the breeds I wanted, I'd have to order about 20 chickens. They have to keep each other warm during the shipping process. I'd LOVE to have 20 chickens, and probably will one day, but for now, I just wanted a handful. (I had 25 chickens and 2 turkeys the year we moved here. Oh the stories.) The Feed Store just had these. They are called 'Production Reds'. What a sad name, isn't it? Larry (Feed Store Guy) assured me that they would be a beautiful chestnut colored hen with a disposition similar to my beloved Buff Orpingtons.

This one looks like trouble. I'm going to keep my eye on that one! Wait...which one is that one?

I hope they will be happy here at 2600 W. I know I've been happy since they've arrived. I love something to nurture. These little babies need nurturing. I absolutely love to hear them 'peeping'. I don't know how they do it. They just sit there and peep, without moving their beaks. It's such a soothing sound to me. The sound of spring. The sound of peace. The sound of me smiling inside. I love chickens. I even like eating them, but PLEASE, don't say that too loud around the girls. I want them to feel secure.

What a sweet distraction from the tooth ache. I blame your trip to the The Chocolate Garden. In fact, to help you out, I suggest forwarding all chocolates to me

  8. Oh Jayme. How sweet the little chicks are. Reminds me of when we were using the incubator for homeschooling and we had our babies hatch and then kept them in the family room in the rabbit hutch we no longer needed. I just put heavy plastic down all over the floor, and we kept those chicks in our house just like a crated doggie. LOL... It was so cool because we were seeing them change by the day...literally. What an awesome project it was, and of course those babies were named and became pets. :-) I remember those little feeders too. Thanks for the memories. I really hope to have chickens again...really....REALLY!! Can't wait. sigh. I do hope you are feeling much better...praying.

  9. Jayme, your writings have all the earmarks of a gifted writer.
I'm glad you reposted, because I was able to view the posts I missed.
I remember my grandmother talking about her pet chicken that followed her everywhere, and when she sat on the swing it roosted on the back of the swing while she swang, (is swang a real word?).
Your going to be fine, better days ahead. Love, Sandy

  11. I just picked out the chicks I want in the Meyer Hatchery catalog. I am going for 14. 2 each of 7 different breeds. Hubs thinks I'm daft. If I read the ordering policy right I just have to order Chicks 3 Bantams 3 and mix and match either one. Hoping when I call I have understood the policy. I'm geeked but it is so cold up here I think I need a later shipment. The farm stores usually start selling chicks late March here.

  16. Such a great story. I can't wait til Spring and the arrival of the fuzzy butts at my local Farm Depot and TSC! 6 out of 6 of the Rhode Island Reds I got last year were ROOSTERS! Not that I've got anything against roosters, but 6 out of 6!! Maybe I'll do better this year.
