Why'd Ya Buy That?

Here's the second installment of 'Why'd Ya Buy That?' Bye bye Windex. No need to spend $3 or more for window cleaner......

But first, a wee update on my surgery. Thank you all so much for your prayers and well wishes. It went just fine. My uterus has had a good overhauling. I'll spare you all the sordid details.

Here's me in pre-op. They had the most wonderful contraption in there! I had this gown on that had these ports in it, and they hooked me up to a hot air blower. Oh my. I'm going to have to make one of these. I figured if I can get an old bonnet hairdryer at Goodwill, I'll be in business.

The anesthesiologist looked just like Mario Lopez. I was mortified when I woke up wearing a pair of disposable panties. I did NOT have these panties on before surgery. Who in the world wrangled these panties on my ginormous gelatinous hiney whilst I was unconscious?? I hope it wasn't Mario. Please, for the love of God, don't let it have been Mario.

Back to the Windex......

Let's talk about cleaners for a minute......do you know you are mainly buying water? Now, I'll admit it, I'm a cleaning product junkie. In fact, a dear friend of mine once gave me some of the new Clorox 'green' cleaning product as part of my birthday present. I was thrilled. I love to clean, I love to smell cleaners, and I like product. I've been making my own window cleaner for some time now, and I love it. I just saved an old Windex bottle and refill it.

Here's the formula: 45% rubbing alcohol, 45% water and 10% ammonia.

After measuring those amounts one time, I drew a little line on the side of the bottle, so that I know how far to fill it with each component without having to measure each time. I know! I'm smart, right?

I have this fantasy....it goes like this:

I open up the sink cabinet where my cleaners are stored, and out shines a ray of sunlight, and little birds fly out and give me a fresh SOS pad and the scent of lemon and rosemary fills the kitchen as I bend down and smile, removing the SOS pad from the bird's beak. All is beautiful, fresh and yellow.

Sigh.

But this is the truth.....

Ugh. It's my nightmare. I can't keep it straight to save my soul. It's almost as embarrassing as the disposable panties incident.

  1. ok, I'm stupid, how do I figure out the percentage of something? Just eyeball it? It seems easy enough, I will try it. Was the bread the first part of why'd ya buy that? I'm glad your past the surgery and hope u feel well. What did A. make for dinner? Keep taking it easy. Lots of love. Me

  2. I've been making my own cleaning products for several years now, and also write on the bottle with a permanent marker! Just a couple of weeks ago I made my first batch of bar soap. So much cheaper, and I know what's in it.
And how simple is it to make your own??? I KNOW!

  3. So glad the surgery went well and that you are home and okay. And the disposable panties and Mario Lopez! Love it. Isn't it a weird feeling to know that people were doing things to you and you had no idea?

  4. Jayme, I am so glad that your surgery went well. I wish you a speedy recovery.

    Love you.

Does everyone know that you are a celebrity around here? That is how I found you. The story that was featuring you in the Post Tribune...; )))).

So of clurse you will get a gorgeous anesthesiologist, the best for the best.

You are sooooooooo smart. I always buy windex, but when I have to clean something, i learned from my grandmother, whiskey..and it smells good. I will have to try your potion one day.

  5. Ok...you are so funny. So very funny! When are you writing you book? I need to know as I want to be first in line to buy it and have you sign it!

Glad your day at the hospital went well. You are lucky to have seen Mario's double! Glad you are home but do you really need to start cleaning the day after???? He-he.

I have never made cleaners but maybe I will start one of these days.

    Happy evening and relax.

  6. Glad you're okay! I will have to try your cleaner recipe. Thank ya. I always struggle with keeping that under sink cabinet straight. But, I also have a Jack Russell Terrier who occasionally decides to rearrange it for me - on her way to the compost bucket :) -Tammy

  7. Rhonda...you don't have to be too precise on the measurements. My windex bottle holds 32 oz...so 10% of that would be 3.2 oz., get it? I just figured it from there...

Farmgirl Cyn...I'm slowly replacing all my 'store bought' cleaners with homemade. I've not found a replacement for bleach yet though, I sure do love bleach, and cleansers like Comet. I used to make all my soap too, but have gotten away from it. I miss it. :-(

Mama Hen, doesn't that paper panty sound like something that would happen to YOU!? LOL

Mirjana, you are just too sweet. I'm not a celebrity, but I'm sure I"m notorious for something around here!

Dogwood, you always make me smile. I'll let you know when the book is out! Don't hold your breath though!

Tammy, I always have such high hopes of a pretty undersink area. I do get it cleaned out, but then I don't maintain it. I've no one to blame but me though!

  8. Good to hear that the surgery went well. Now you just need to rest. Quick question...When did you travel to Seattle in order to take a picture of my "under the kitchen sink" area? I've been meaning to tackle it before now and I want you to know I'll be cleaning it up tonight right after dinner. Take care.

  9. Glad you're surgery went well. Just try to block the whole paper pantie thing from your mind...
I've been making my own window cleaner for a while now, too. Mine is a little different and makes a gallon of liquid. 2tbs ammonia, 1tsp dishwashing soap, 1 pint rubbing alcohol. Put in gallon jug, fill slowly (will suds) with water. From the gallon jug I just pour it into an old windex bottle I saved, ready to go.

  10. Glad to hear your surgery went well, all but the paper panties part... Wait a minute, aren't the paper pants for men? Women usually get the paper gowns don't they. Uh Oh!!! LOL

Thanks for the window cleaner recipe, I'll have to empty the brand new bottle of windex then make your recipe.

I had to do a double take of under the sink, it honestly looked like mine.

You know what they say, if you clean no one comes by, but if you don't; company always comes.

Oh, what was the warm air dryer thingy? Did they have to fill you full of hot air prior to surgery? hehe :)

    Have a great night,
    Mel

  12. Aren't you so clever?!? Homemade Windex!! I use it for everything, well..not pimples, but everything else. Did you know it's THE best carpet stain remover?? Never have kids w/o it.
When you get that blowie blanket thing rigged up can I borrow it for my next surgery? My hospital doesn't have those. They do have that blanket microwave oven to warm em up tho. Don't try it at home. The blanket does get nice and warm but it smells like old spagetti sauce and coffee.

  13. I almost peed my pants! Don't worry, it wasn't Mario....probably a trio of nurses (were any of them male?!)

You MUST at least smell Mrs. Meyers' cleaning supplies. Basil, geranium, mmmmmmmm!

BTW, I like your new banner but I miss the chickies!

  14. A little belatedly I say, "Welcome back ... glad you had a wonderful trip ... good luck on the surgery!" Whew, you've been a busy woman! Hope you're feeling better. Just read through your posts of the last couple of days. The cemetery scenes brought me to tears, don't know why. I think it was feeling the same as you ... "can't wait until I see them again."
I am still laughing at the hospital story ... I had a similar experience once (how'd THOSE get on me?) and why IS it always the good-looking guy? Uggh.
Thanks for starting my day off with laughter and tears. I needed to shed some of both!

  15. Oh My God! This made me laugh out loud! I needed that, so thank you! I shudder at the thought of my own hiney being wrangled into disposale panties while I am unconcious. Hilarious. Your dream of the birdy handing your cleaning supplies actually makes me want to stop reading blogs and CLEAN! It's a miracle.

  16. Glad to hear your surgery went well!! :) I'm a cleaning product junkie too. The best thing next to bleach is baking soda. I will definitely have to mark my bottles like you did...that makes more sense that fishing around for the recipe again! :) Another couple of things I like to use is a few drops of lavender essential oil in a bottle of water for everything from wetting down my hair, to ironing, to cleaning. And orange essential oil in my mop water. Smells so yummy!

  17. OMG-I am ROFL over the disposable panties! You never cease to make me laugh! xoxo

  18. I use only alcohol and water (1/2 and 1/2). You don't need the ammonia at all!!! My parents live in an old loft, and my dad was cleaning the windows over and over with Windex, trying to get the streaks out. I told him to let me try it my way, and it was amazing how clean and streak free the window I did was. He poured out that Windex, rinsed the bottle, and filled it with my 1/2 alcohol, 1/2 water formula! (-;
