Roast Your Own Coffee at Home - A Video Tutorial - (of sorts)

I have no idea why I do this to m'self.
I really think I need to be one of those blogs that photoshops everything and puts that foggy filter on it so that things look all dreamy.
But here we go - roasting your own coffee.

I had to do it in two parts - cause I really don't know how to work a camera.
And at the tail end of the first one - I've no idea what happened.
And - I want braces.
And.
Liposuction.

http://www.burmancoffee.com/ is where I order my beans from - but there are quite a few green bean purveyors out there - so just Google 'green coffee beans' or 'roasting your own coffee' and you'll be amazed at the offerings.

YouTube has a bunch of videos about coffee roasting, and they probably don't involve singing, choking, and stumbling over your words like mine.
At least I didn't burn down the garage - yet.

Here's another blog post I did about coffee roasting about a year ago, has some great before and after       pictures.

*clarification about the de-gassing part - it's just putting them in an air tight container and not using them for a couple of days.*

  1. AWESOME!
I don't know about braces, but you certainly don't need lipo! And go ahead and sing more, you've got such a great voice!...Gosh, I sing out loud and can't sing worth a darn, the cats try and bite me...

I think I am going to try this!

  2. Jayme,
Do you put any oil (or any type of lubricant) in the bottom of the pan before you begin to roast the beans? It may be a silly question, but I know nothing about this, so just thought I would check. I ordered my instant yeast off of Amazon earlier in the week and have my new cast iron dutch oven all seasoned and ready to go. I better hurry as I am getting behind! Oh, yes, I splurged on some King Arthur's flour, too. Can't wait to try my first bread! Thanks so much!

  3. Jayme you did marvelous! Love your voice too. I got my Dutch oven today and we are making the bread dough tonight...........daughter is coming over in the morning for a hot slice. Just so others will know a cast iron Dutch oven at Wal-Mart was 35.00. Now I've got to go find a whirlie popcorn popper. I love coffee so I'm looking forward to roasting my beans. Wish Phyllis would have made an appearance.

  6. Coopster,

Love the coffee tutorial! As I said before, I am not a coffee drinker, but I soooo want to try this. I think I need you to start giving me a list of things I need to have in advance like dutch ovens and camp stoves. Mainly because I want to run into my garage this very minute and roast some coffee, yet I don't have any green beans or a camp stove. Wait, my husband says we have a camp stove. Oh well, who knew! I love it and I feel like I want to drag my soccer chair into your garage and listen to you sing while you roast your beans.

  7. Question Coop...do you pour your hot beans right onto your tile counter or do you put something down first? I'm afraid I'll stain/crack/ruin my new countertops!

And will you please come observe me for my virgin roast? I'm skeered!! I don't want to ruin my first batch! k? K! Thankyouverymuch.

I'm gonna be sooo cool doing all this stuff you do! Ha!!

  8. first off I need one of those whirlybird popcorn poppers and then I need to find a source for the green coffee beans. We do love fresh ground and I buy my beans at Sam's club and the coffeemaker grind them each morning. Coffee is at the tippy top of my list, so I just may have try this. One question, do different varities take more or less time...I know the beans I buy are sometimes chocolate brown and sometimes dark brown.
P.S.I wish the banty had made a guest appearance!

  14. This may be a silly question but did you say you gas them? Does that mean you leave the container open or cracked to let the gas off? I just love the things you do!! I'm gonna try the bread for sure, then I might just try the roasting.. You make me want to learn cool things I didn't know I wanted to know!! hhmmm..

  20. Jayme,
I think you missed your calling as a video tutorial (ist). Can that be a word for today? And your singing voice is beautiful. Thank you for sharing your down home skills, I had no idea that roasting coffee beans was that simple. I am going to try roasting now. Thanks. Lastly, I like many who asked the question about gassing, what is it exactly, and what is the process?

  21. Ok, that has to make the best cup of coffee known to man (woman)...yum! I'm amazed how easily you function with the mittens on! I kept thinking you were going to drop things, especially the pretty canister! ;-)
Loved that you had a chicken helper, too!

Have you always been so ready to seize life by the horns? I love it!

  23. You are so much fun Jayme! We have one of those whirly corn poppers and we have a camp stove so I could do this, I could. But I would need to replace the old popcorn popper with a new one first because it is hubs and we do use it for popcorn. Have a great Sunday!

  24. That's so very cool! (Well, I guess cold for you, standing out in the barn!) The sound when it starts cracking reminds me of the crackle of camp fire... all the more reason for you to sing while roasting coffee! :)

  25. Very excited to try this! I have been a frustrated coffee drinker for YEARS! Never understood why I couldn't enjoy an amazing cup of coffee in my very own home. Now I have hope. :) A few questions...I noticed you had the fliptop lid opened towards the end of the roasting...how do you know when to do that? Also, are you totally going by sight on "when the beans are done"? How brown do you want them? And, oh, I would love to know more about what you do next. The grinding process and what kind of coffee maker you would recommend.

  28. Only you could get away with blogging from your garage! :)
Your coffee makes my Folgers French Roast seem sad and pitiful! I'll be over in the morning for a cup!

  29. LOL- All you really need to complete this process is a donkey and a mustache and a hill to grow your own beans...just saying...AND you could serenade yourself as you rode into the hills. (Well, yourself AND the donkey)...lol

Gosh, girl...you just do it all..and the truth is ...I would love you if you didn't do ANY of it. From one "old soul" to another- xxoo Diana

  31. Jayme! You are so talented! I love watching you and your DIY videos.
I want to roast MY OWN coffee now.
What is wrong with your teeth that you need braces?
And the liposuction? We should ALL have access to a a home machine if we want, as far as I'm concerned anyway. Can you just imagine the outcome of that? Maybe that's a bad idea.
Oh yes, AND you have a great voice, why aren't you singing somewhere for a living? Or maybe you do. Fabulous!
You are a natural in front of the camera!
I'm a little late watching these but I hope you have a great day and can't wait forthe pie crust video.

  32. Tea? I'm a tea drinker, but I love, love the smell of brewing coffee. Which might seem a trifle odd seeing as how the smell of coffee also reminds me of skunk. Strange... I know.

Your house must have the most glorious aroma... coffee, not skunk. Having your own channel on YouTube is so great. Now I have to go back and check out all your videos.

  33. You're so entertaining and such a fun person to know from afar. Hubby makes his own coffee but doesn't roast his beans yet. When he gets on that kick I'll show him your video. Tried the bread yesterday and it's a keeper. Couldn't be easier! Thank you. Hope you make pie crust so simple. Peggy

The post before this one ....sounds like you started a whole new life - picking up on another one out of your nine lives or however many you are pulling out of this lifetime, girl...I am all ears to hear about ALL this...And that girl is so skinny she looks sickly to me...(sorry skinny model)..however my eyes did pick up on how healthy the chickens look....purty!...AND I NOTICED THE GLASS OF WINE THEY HAD TO ALLOW HER TO DRINK BEFORE SHE COULD STAND THERE AND HOLD THAT POULTRY PROP.... 36. This was great! And keep up the singing! You sounded wonderful. I am envisioning you all dressed up like a 1950's lounge singer/songstress, singing about Black Coffee and doing this video... I think, for future videos, dress-up, sing, and do your thing. For the upcoming pie crust video, dress as June from Leave It to Beaver, and sing?? You choose the song. Can't wait!

  37. This is why I am soooo glad you became a blogger. You're too cute! And you're a natural in front of the camera! Now that I've seen this done, I really want to give it a try. I'm a visual person, I prefer to see how to do something rather than read it, so thank you!

Oh and I'm glad to hear you're still planning on doing maple syrup this year! Yippee!! We're getting ready!
