Dutch Oven Bread Tutorial!

Without further adieu!
The first of many video tutorials of life about the old farmhouse.

Here's the recipe....

3 cups all purpose flour
1.5 t kosher salt
1/4 t instant yeast
1.5 cups warm water

please watch video for instructions!

(I'm adding this - I've gotten a few emails asking about the yeast.  I use instant yeast - but if all you have is the 'Red Star Active Yeast' - go ahead and try it.  You've not much to lose.  It might work just fine.  I haven't used that kind of yeast in a few years, and I've never tried making it with that yeast...but don't let that stop you from trying.
: -)

Walking is the most important part of losing weight.. PLUS I was able to shed one of the medications for my diabetes because of losing weight and the walking.~! I was happy.

Just remember the biggest compliment our children can give us is leave the nest when they get older. It's hard but it's necessary.

  10. Love the videos!! The 500 degree oven means I have to clean my oven first. Things could get a little smoky :)

  11. Hi Jayme!
The bread tutorial video is awesome! I think you should submit this to the Food Network, you would be great as "The Farmhouse Chef" or maybe "The Farmer's Wife". You are much more interesting than some of the chefs they have on there now! If that's not your cup of tea then we'll just keep tuning in here!! We are your loyal fans!
    Velvia

    P.S. Your hair looks great!

  12. Do you think you can use wheat flour in this bread?

  13. Excellent! I love watching you on video...I found one of these pots a couple years ago at a garage sale and didn't buy it as I knew I would not be camping! now I am on the lookout!

    Thanks for sharing.

  14. I'm so going to try this recipe! I've made yeast breads the old fashioned way for years. Then I snagged a bread machine at a Goodwill store for just $15 ...so these days I make bread the lazy way, letting my machine do all the kneading. But this recipe looks SO easy!

You've graduated from blogging to Vlogging, Jayme ...and you make it look so easy! You go, girl!

  15. This was great!!! My oldest daughter and I are trying this..starting tomorrow evening..maybe I will be brave and send pictures. You and Aaron are so fun..thanks for doing this, I have been looking forward to it. Have a fabulous weekend!

  16. Jayme, you did a wonderful job on the video! You're so cute!

I tried this about a year ago and didn't have much success with it. It was so hard we couldn't chew it. So then I used the "Artisan Bread in 5 minutes a day" method. It's basically the same recipe, but you bake it on a sizzling hot pizza stone instead of the dutch oven. It is really wonderful and I had to stop baking it because I was getting "bread belly". Well, I still have it, because bread is like my favorite food.

Oh, yeah, if you cover the handle on the enameled cast iron pan lid with a double layer of heavy-duty foil, it does fine in the 500 degree oven.

    Loved the video!!

  17. That was great! Really! It was so much better than anything I've ever seen on Martha Stewart. Your show has personality! It was good to see Aaron, too!

  18. Jaybird, Great video! I definitely want to make this bread. WOW! Aaron's hair looks fabulous. The boy child sure is growing up fast. Hugs, Cyn

I loved this tutorial and CANNOT wait for more!!

  20. Oh bummer I was going to make this bread tonight to go with a chicken stew that I found at Mennonite Girls Can Cook. I just came in to see what I needed and watch your video before going to the grocery. Well it is noon and there is not enough time for the rise unless we eat at midnight so I think we will have it with left over stew tomorrow. Stew is always better the next day anyway. Thanks Jayme loved the video and so great to see the boy child hanging with you.

  21. Great tutorial!! I have come across this recipe on a couple of other sites but have never tried it but as soon as I am off my diet (daughter is getting married this summer) I plan to make it!! :) Can't wait for your other tutorials. Your personality comes across as fantastic!! I came across a dutch oven like that at an estate sale recently and the crazy people were asking $150!! It was still there for $75 a few days later. We don't camp though but it would have been col to have at a decent price. I'm always on the hunt for cast iron. Love you and your blog. Thanks!!

  22. Love, love, love the tutorial! I'll have to give this bread a try. Thank you for doing this!

  23. Fun, Jayme...just wanted to mention...I think I read that the heavy enamel colored pots should not be heated above 450°and not just the handle...something about the paint.

  24. Great video, Keepster! You were made for the camera. It makes me miss you! Your hair looks great, and it's so fun to see how much that boy loves his Marmie...or is it Marmy?

  25. The video was super. I am going to try this bread tomorrow. If I am successful, I'll take it to our church fellowship meal next week. Thanks!

  27. I'm so excited about trying this, but I have quick rise yeast. Is that the same as instant?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Just recently found your blog! Love it! Love it! Love it! Excited each time I see you have newly posted. Great bread tutorial. Love seeing Aaron, cutie putie!

  29. one more reason to love you... bread baking secrets! I actually am a bread baker but I have never bought the parchment paper because it was so dang expensive! I didn't know you could reuse it! Great tutorial, great recipe and loved Aaron's guest spot. You need to do your tutorials on his sleepover days and he can be your prep cook...

  30. I'm a bit behind in getting to view this, Jayme. You did it and you did a GREAT job! Looking forward to making this bread...but first, I will need to find a dutch oven. I have one, but it is like your red one...the handle deal. BUT I WILL make this! ;-) Thanks for your time you gave to do this for us.

  31. My husband already makes dutch oven bread, although he watched your tutorial and was very interested, since your version is a bit different from his. But the reason for this comment is to tell you what a FANTASTIC job you did on this tutorial, really, just stellar! I'm so impressed - even I could make this bread!

  32. Jayme,
Amazon.com sells a replacement knob for the top of dutch ovens. I think they are $15 which is pricey, but might help some out who already have an enameled dutch oven and do not want to buy (or store) another one. The replacement know is usually for Le Creuset pots, but fits all kinds and can be used at the temperatures you are recommending for the bread. I can't wait to try it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jayme,
I just looked it up. Go on Amazon and type in "LeCreuset Replacement Knob". It is under $10 and is usable for ANY TEMPERATURE which is great. Hope this helps. Bonnie

  34. Just watched your enjoyable video and if you could fake a French accent you'd rival Julia Child! What fun you have in the kitchen. As you age the cast iron seems to put on weight. Have given away pots and skillet which were too heavy to handle. Keep up your entertaining ways. Lots of us old ladies enjoy you. Peggy

  35. Jayme I guess Peggy never met the fake accent lady in your previous posts.................you could SO rival Julia with her help. Peg from Decatur

  36. This is great. I'm trying it! Thanks for sharing. Luv-Loretta

  37. This is Peggy relying to Peg in Decatur. Just found Jayme after Christmas and she is a hoot. So down to earth like us. And I have to ask if your Decatur is in Illinois? If so, I'm about 10 miles away. LOL Peggy Also going to peruse the past years to see and learn more.

  38. Loved this video! Great job and I look forward to more.

What kind of movie camera did you use?

  39. Oh yes that would be Decatur, Illinois Peggy. I love Jayme and Aaron and I know you will too. They are the light to my dreary old retired life most days.

  41. Your video is cute -- down and dirty, which I like. Di from A Blueridge Girl turned me on to you.

I'm a bread baker from way back -- have a 5 lb. bag in the fridge.

You may have inspired me to make my own video of something -- not sure what.

I have allergies too. I relate.

  42. Miss Jayme Coop keeper, I 've been a skulking around your sweet little blog for a few months now. It's a sickness
How often I click on your bookmark. You just feel like an old friend who thinks like me and laughs like me. Our lives have bumped up against each others. I just wanted to tell you that I've felt like praying for you and yours just lately.
And that I'm listening to the nudge that says I should. So, sister friend you and yours are being held before the lord. Send me a note if there is any teeny tiny thing I could help in another way. God bless you my friend!

  43. I am definitely making this bread Jayme. Aaron looks so handsome. but I think he would be handsome even bald. You did great. Keep them coming.

  44. Made this bread Saturday - awesome! It's definitely my new "go-to" bread. Also, I used Active Yeast, doubled the amount to 1/2 tsp. (just in case! LOL) and it worked fine. Will start backing off on the amount of yeast to see how little will work.

Great video! Loved it! Tthe bread tastes wonderful, has a wonderful texture - and my hands thank you for the no-knead recipe.

  45. Great video, you are lots of fun. I like your hair cut. Is the young man your son? I didn't watch the entire video, but I watched enough to know that girl, you are made for this sort of thing! Very entertaining, informative, and very down home and down to earth personality. I liked your son (?) popping in and sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Okay, looked around a bit more, I read that your 'son' is your nephew! Glad you are such a wonderful Aunty.

  47. Well, something must be wrong with my computer, I could see your videos yesterday and was coming to see your bread one and its all a dark black square. I even looked back to your cute coffee roasting one that I saw last night and its gone too, just a black square. Oh well, I will come back later and see if I can see it.

    Have a blessed day!
