Shanghai'd in Indiana

This morning I woke Glen up and told him he needed to be ready to leave by 9:30 in the am.
He had no idea why, and I wasn't about to tell him.

I'd made plans for the whole day, unbeknownst to him.
In true Glenco fashion he said 'I'll try not to ruin your day.'
For those of you that don't know us in 'real life' - Glen is pretty much my polar opposite.  I'm hyper - he's mellow.  I get excited over everything, it takes a lot to impress him - I'm talky, he's quiet.

I had spontaneous fits of clapping and giddyness as I packed our lunch.
It may or may not have been the 'Bacon Lover's' Dietz and Watson turkey lunchmeat.

I got a bit gussied up.
I put on the necklace.
I only put on the necklace when I'm going somewhere - like a funeral, a wedding - or to see blogging friends.

It's not a fancy necklace, it's just somewhat fashionable - and that word is usually not used in the same sentence as my name.

We went to church y'all.
Glenco was quite surprised.
In a long drawn out story that I shant share here, I haven't gone to church in about seven years.

After church, we parked at the Square and had our lunch.
I'm cheap like that - and I like my food better than most restaraunts.
I find no pleasure in spending $25 on a mediocre lunch.

None -  in like zero.
Did I mention the Bacon Lover's Turkey?
Did I mention the Peanut Butter Banana Bread??

Law - this stuff was good.
It's from Cooking Light - so it's semi-healthy.
There's even flaxseed meal in there.

Our next stop was the Barker Mansion in Michigan City, Indiana.

It's a mansion built in 1857 by a local millionaire industrialist.
One thing Glenco and I share is a love of old homes.
38 rooms of opulence.
Unfortunately we were unable to go in all of them.
And - unbeknownst to me - we weren't allowed to take photos either.

I got two before a post-menopausal woman stopped me dead in my tracks.
My first thought was that she needed moisturizer.*
After two minutes with the woman, I realized that she needed more than that - yea, her very soul needed moisturizer.

This was the butler's kitchen, and the spot I was busted.
I was so determined to show you photos of the interior that I kept taking pictures, with my camera hanging down....

Great shot huh?  Nice sleeve.

After a couple of gas station coffee's and a quick stop at a thrift store (Glenco likes thrifting too - he's just not really aware of it yet) - we were on the way to the next stop.

I really wanted to see 'True Grit' today - but don't you know - Glenco wasn't feelin' it.
And afterall, it was 'Glenco's Day' - so I didn't push the issue - although now I'm reallllly wishing we'd have gone.

Can I just say how happy I am that Jeff Bridges is enjoying a comeback?
I've loved him since 'Jagged Edge'.

So here I sit in this drafty old house, wrapped up in afghans, snuggling with a little banty chicken and typing away to you.  Glen has 'The Lawrence Welk Show' on, and I know it's just to get a rise out of me.
Dear Lord, I hope it's for that reason, and not that we've crossed that invisible line of oldness where we'd rather be in the house with chickens and blankets and Lawrence Welk than out among the English watching a movie.

* Tomorrow I will be speaking at the Lowell Garden Club - held at the Lowell Library - on Natural Skin Care - or 'Skin Care from the Kitchen' - at 6:30pm.
Would be great to meet some local blog readers!

Loved your whole day that you gave Glenco...

oh...and be sure to let us know if the Lawrence Welk Show was truly to just get a rise out of you! :-) That would be a hoot, if it wasn't, cuz I'm 61 and we definitely aren't playing Lawrence Welk around here. lol

  3. This post is a balm to my soul. For so many reasons, but mostly for your first photo and your last line.

ps - Before bed, C-ster asked, "Is the Coop Keeper coming this week?"

Just thought you should know. Methinks we need to reschedule jammy day.

  6. So... did Bobby and Cissy put in an appearance while Lawrence was on? I must say, even my parents didn't watch Lawrence Welk but I watched many an episode with my grandparents.

Sounds like you had a fantastic day. I really like the stealth pictures ;)

  7. You & Glen sound just like me & dug. Polar opposites! Somehow, it works. I always say "he drives me crazy...and, he drives me crazy."
We saw True Grit on Christmas day. It is good. I think you would like it!
Is his name really Glenco or is that your nickname for him?

Your lunch looks fantastic. We decided today that no restaurant is as good as home cooking. I had an unusual version of lasagna and not in a good way!
I love the sneaky pictures and I think I know a few who need moisturizer on their souls!!
I saw a sign today that made me think of you...a hen is only an egg's way of making another egg. Silly! Glad you are back woman!!

  10. What a wonderful day you had. I want to see that movie also but hubs does not go to the movies. I might have to get someone else to volunteer to go with me. My friends and I got busted taking pictures at a crafts fair. The thing is we were not wanting to copy the design at all just wanted to show someone a picture of this sweatshirt made into a cute jacket. So glad to be able to come visit with you again.

  15. I've missed you so! As I have taken some time off also. But my favorite line is "spend $25 on a mediocre lunch". I feel the same way!! I do love cooking, and can cook pretty well...But I have a big wish for this year-- to learn more about my chickens. So, I will be tuning in here often to re-read some older posts. You are so fun, wish I could come to the skin care meeting :)

  17. I have not had regular computer access for over 8 months....until last week! It was interesting to see what blogs I really missed reading and I just had to tell you that YOU are on that list. So glad you are still here telling your story! Happy 2011...I am so ready to leave 2010 behind. I am grateful for the lessons but ready to embrace a new year. I look forward to reading more about your adventures!

  18. What a great idea - to kidnap your husband and take him on an all day date. I like that. Perhaps I'll try that this next weekend. (I've been wanting to see that movie, too and I know my man will!)

Wish I could hear you speak tomorrow! I know it will be FAB!!

P.S. So glad you got to worship corporately today!

  19. I think we may have a few more years before we cross the invisible line, but I think we are inching towards it. My mom used to watch Lawrence and I thought it was so corny. Now I look and think,"Oh, see how nice the ladies were dressed and how neat and put together they were...."

I sound JUST like my mom.

  23. What a great idea to just kidnap your hubby and spend a day surprising him. I'm sure he'll like thrifting in no time. ;-)
    I'm glad you're back!

  24. Okay- I read the whole post- and loved it...but I have to tell you- you are probably the only other person I know that even ever heard of the movie Jagged Edge. It is probably one of my all time favorite movies...(wish I could make a letter go up in the air here cuz you would get that). It is one movie I have watched many times...and I keep wanting the ending to change cuz I soooo loved the guy!

I am so happy to see you back here-love your sense of humor-love you too~ Hugs- Diana

  25. I'd take your home-packed lunch any day over restaurant food. It's true.
Speaking of the Lowell Garden Club, are you on The Walk this year? Are you getting spring fever yet? I got my first little inkling when I opened one of the many seed catalogs that are showing up in my mailbox on a regular basis. It's the zinnia photos that get me everytime. Did I tell you I actually tried to over winter some of my zinnias? Did I also tell you that my hubby flipped the breaker in the greenhouse thinking it would just turn off the ventilation fan, but it also turned off the heater? Um, hello. All we lost were the impatiens, thank goodness. Boy, would he have been in the doghouse bigtime if everything had gone to the great compost heap in the sky.
I miss ya, DJ! Can't wait to lay my eyes on ya for reals sometime in two oh eleven!

  31. One day at a time--this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past for it is gone; and do not be troubled about the future, for it has not yet come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful it will be worth remembering.
Lawrence Welk was always on my grandparent's television set when I would visit them.
Hee Haw was always on my parent's.
Mad Men, Weeds and The Tutors are on mine.
I would have gone to see True Grit with you Damn Jaym, I mean Dame Jaym. We could have made it a double feature and seen The Little Falkers afterwards.
Just remember, my friend, you can't change the past, but you can ruin the present by worrying about the future.

    Love,
    Deborah
