The Sweetest Readers Ever

I'm not sure if you guys know how much I think about you all.
Silly things will run through my head at times, I'll see something and it'll spark a thought about one of you.

Your comments are a balm to my soul.

And I need me some balm up in here today!

You see - I'm a pile of acronyms today.

Even the chickens seem to step to the side when they see me coming....

PMS
ADD
OCD

Oh yes - it's bad today - and the allergy fog that I'm in doesn't help.  My head really doesn't feel attached to my body in any way - which leads to moments such as -

Painting my front door red.
Going out in my pajamas at daybreak to look at it 17 times to assess my approval of said red door.
Crossing the street to look at it.
Getting in the car and driving by from both directions to look at it.
Not knowing if I like it.
Obsessing that the verbena in the pot near the door is more of a fuchsia tone and doesn't match the door.
Wanting to paint the brick wall on the porch red again.
Wanting to be a brunette.
Cancelling all the plans I have on the calendar for the next two weeks.
Adding more plans to the calendar for the next two weeks.
Thinking about pie.

And then - if that weren't enough -
I swore at my bees.

I did.
Now, normally I'm all zen-like up in the hives - enjoying the placid buzzing sound.
The bees were angry my friends.
In fact, so angry - that even though I felt virtually sting proof in my beekeeper get up - they were freaking me out - a lot.
I decided to get out of the bee yard for a bit to let them calm down - and the stinkers followed me all the way back to the house.
And I swore at them.
I know this surprises you.
It did me too.

But, I did take 85lbs of their golden nectar, with about 50lbs more to come.
I have no idea why crack cocaine is so popular when you could access local honey much easier.

Oh ya.
It's that good.
One spoonful and you'll be itching for more.
You'll sell your Longaberger basket collection to get more.
You'll beg, borrow and steal for the regurgitated goodness.

But y'all don't have to go to those lengths.
I'd love to give three jars of it away.

Three pint sized jars of raw honey to three sweet readers.
Continental US only please.
I do have the nicest readers on the web.
Thank you.

All ya have to do is ask me a question, anything - and I'll answer it here on the blog - and choose three winners out of the comments, randomly of course, so no grovelling allowed.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go look at paint swatches.

Amen.

  1. What is your favorite way to use honey? Personally, I can eat it straight out of the jar with a spoon--it is that good and addictive! It's also hard to beat a tablespoon of honey in a cup of hot chai.

  5. My question will show my ignorance... How do you eat honey? Do you cook/bake with it, or eat it raw? This city girl would love to try some!
I wanted to comment on your half-marathon post, too. Congratulations! What an accomplishment! You probably ran right past my office in the Wrigley Building! Glad you ate at Grand Lux - I eat lunch there whenever I am having a bad day - about once a week lol!

  6. Hi Jayme....we had the same problem with our bees this summer....madder than hornets. Apparently, there is a juvenile hormone present in the hive and at times it is very high causing very aggressive behavior. They actually came at me and stung me while I was mowing their grass! Little "bit*$*#*$s" I called them!! But things have settled down again...."Whew!"

So, my advice is this....hang on....tomorrow will be better, and if not, the next day.....it always is eventually.

Great honey....I would love to try yours to see if it tastes any different than ours. Yours is lighter in color than ours.....and lovely!!

  7. If you decide against red, what's the next color you'll try for the door? The honey is beautiful:@)

  9. You are sooo funny. :) Hmmm, a question...how do you use your honey since I am assuming your sugar/sweets intake is way down? Thanks for your generosity! :)

  10. I think of myself as being fairly domestic... you know... everything from scratch. I bake, cook, knit, keep chickens, grow vegetables, clean my own house. Still, when I read your blog, I feel like I'm not doing enough. You inspire and motivate me!

So my question for you, my friend, is:
Is there anything you don't do?

  11. What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of keeping chickens....in a typical Mid Atlantic suburban backyard with a Husky? Thanks!

  12. Hi Jayme, I just have to tell you that I love your blog. I look forward to reading it everyday and I missed you while you were away. You amaze me, with all you do. Tell me, what made you want to keep bees? They scare me to death, but I do so love the honey!!

  13. Ohhh, please enter me for the honey! James was eating honey on a spoon the other day and he told me honey can't really can't for sugar because it is "healthy" sugar. I see is point, but eating it straight from the jar spoon after spoon can't be good for anybody!

My question-do you have a favorite chicken now and are you open about it? Do the other chickens know? Are they scarred? Do you try to make it up to them in other ways?.... Inquiring minds want to know....

  17. Ok....So did you decide whether you love the red door or not? We painted our door red last summer....our siding is very pale yellow and we have a dark hunter green roof.....I LOVE the door red!!! Also...If I do not get picked....would you be interested in selling your honey? I live local. Just let me know! Thanks, Jodi cherishedroses@hotmail.com

About the question, you have been so open and honest with us and sharing your life here that we all feel like we know you. I know there is more to you that you have not shared with us but I am not one to ask many questions for fearing I am being nosey beyond what you have shared with us. I know your love for your chickens is endless, so what is your favorite guy or gall you have and their names?

  38. I too took a little blogging break but now looking back, I can't remember all I did!? I know it was HECTIC...but without a little blogging about it...I forget! So, I am telling myself to get back on the horse/computer and get going. I just love reading your lifes blogs and truly admire your spirit. A Marathon and just the thing to turn a person on for sure. I personally lost 20lbs this year so far, but need another 25lbs off. I fall off the wagon periodically and eat half a bag of meltaways or three buttercream donuts and tell myself..See don't you feel like CRAP!?? and I do, seriously know what your saying, but what is with that little evil voice that tells you "its OK" just this once...You can start tomorrow" and when tomorrow comes, same voice saying, today isn't such a good day...wait until Monday. I did find that while I dieted the main thing was veggies and veggies and really felt good eating them, before, during and after. Give me one of those stern talking to's. I need to know WHY I want to lose it and just HOW good I will seriously feel. Not to mention just plain healthy! Somedays that evil voice is just too loud. p.s. I just Love you!

  40. We've just moved into our country dream house and we're getting chickens and plan on getting honey bees next year. In all the planning for the coop we find ourselves singing your wicked coon song...sure gets stuck in your head. What has been your best defense against these nasty intruders...kinda like the one I keep chasing off our porch that clearly isn't afraid of my yard sticks slappin' together two inches from his face. We're thinking armed guards...any suggestions? PS please send honey!!

  45. I am leaving in 30 minutes to take my soon to be 18 year old (tomorrow is 'adult' day for him!) to run his first 5K with my dearest friend who will turn 50 in October. You see, my friend's husband became ill this week last year with what we thought was heart trouble, and she was scheduled to run the 5K as a personal goal for herself. Her husband's last facebook post was 'Go, Kathy, Go!'. She ran the 5K alone, because he was not well enough to be there, but he supported her all the way and was so proud. Turns out, he had lung cancer and by Dec 1 of 2010, he was gone. My loving son, of whom I am so proud, is running this race with her this year b/c he wants to support her and not have her run alone. I am standing on the side watching with her 10 year old daughter. Your post is so encouraging to me right now. By seeing how hard you have worked and how you can do it, I know now I can do this with her next year, b/c my darling son has chosen to run the half marathon next year. And we will all do it in rembrance of my friend's husband. Thank you for posting these things and showing those of us who sit and dream of triatholon's with cokes and snicker's bars in our hands. Guess it's time to put down the candy and start picking up the shoes. You look wonderful by the way, so strong and happy. My question for you would be, how should someone start? What shoes, equipment do you recommend?

Because honey...if it ain't pms its premenopause and you are gonna be in it for the long haul. ANd it ain't fun. Ain't nuthin' fun about it. PMS is a cake walk compared to the crap I'm going through with peri-menopause. If you draw my name for the honey, feel free to give it to another person from me! 79. Jayme, I forgot to post this yesterday, but the reason your bees are so angry is because they are protecting their honey stores for the winter! They ALWAYS get fussy this time of year. Last year one of my girls came out of the hive and bit me on the cheek... no provocation, just ZAP-WHAM! (I have a suit now!) It is kinda chilling when they get that cranky. Even with a suit!

  80. Were you the A+ student in your creative writing class? I think so and why didn't you ever tell us that? What was your teacher, professor's name?

    Three, THREE questions . . .

    I LOVE HONEY!

    ReplyDelete
  81. What made you first decide to get into getting your first hive?

I'm curious because we started a hive soon after my husband was stung by a bee and it helped his chronic leg pain. We googled bees/pain and found many people sting themselves on purpose (BVT...bee venom therapy). By coincidence, there happened to be an apitherapy conference coming up close by (Raleigh, NC) which my husband and I both attended (3 day conference on BEES!) It was wonderful and we learned SO MUCH. Of course, I can't remember any specifics (turning 50 in Nov!) but I learned about all the benefits honey is good for (and the propolis and royal jelly). I also learned the difference between pasturized and raw honey. Unfortunately, we got over excited and started our hives (without doing our "homework")
only to find the bees die af few months later. Obviously we need to learn more before getting more bees!

I'm so proud of you and actually getting honey! Wish you were closer to give us pointers!

Love, love, LOVE your blog! I use to look forward to watching Oprah but now I look forward to reading your new post! Thanks for all the time you devote to your blog to give us readers something to look forward to.

    1. Do you know how beautiful you are inside and outside?
    2. Do you have anything else in your life, or past that you would change if you could?
    3. What is your favorite thing to do when you have time, besides all the stuff we see on the blog, is there like a secret you are keeping from us? IE: Do you dress up in Star Wars get ups and watch all the movies or do you get dressed up like Mother Goose and read to the kids at the local preschool, come on tell me!!!

  89. Just wanted to let you know that I have been reading your blog for about a year and have really enjoyed it. I am getting 5 baby chicks in the mail next week and I have you to thank (blame?) for it. Thanks for being an inspiration.

  91. I would love to have a red door. I bet yours is very cool. I am Terry from Oklahoma. I can't remember where I found you,but your blog title is what drew me in several months ago. Sorry about the lurking.
You go girl. I am tickled for you on your finishing the run. Can you eat honey on the diet regeme you are on? I have heard eating local honey helps with allergies and the like.

  92. Do you per chance have any Bantam chickens, and if so, how do they get along with the others?
    Thanks

  94. Jayme,

Sorry to hear you are feeling acronymy (my own invention) today.

You are very creative and have lots of interests. So my question is: When you are feeling like a pile of acronyms what do you do that helps you find your center?

    Good luck with your give-a-way!

  95. Don't qualify as in France, but I can empathise with pain ditherings. It's called being a woman isn't it? Hope bees calm down soon. Must be the time of year!

  96. Your honey looks divine! Wow, I'd be thrilled to have a jar!

My question -- do you have food items you have completely removed from your diet or do you eat whatever you want only in moderation? I ask because you sound so happy and look great. I need to know your secret!

  97. Hi Jayme, I have been lurking as you continue yourself improvement project (clean eatting). WTG by the way you look wonderful. When you are having a bad day, how do you change your attitude from "I don't want to", to "I will"? You inspire me.
