This about sums it up.
We are in for a doozy of a cold snap.
-15 with windchills perhaps historically low - I'm hearing reports of -50.
10 more inches of snow due on top of the 8ish we have now - then the winds start.
So what am I doing?
Knitting a new hat, trying to talk Aaron into staying home from gymnastics tonight, putting new batteries in my camera to do a 'Tundra Cam' video - and cobbling up this soup:
Right now it's just below freezing out, and it's a perfect opportunity for some photos.
If there's one thing I've learned in my near 52 years of livin' in the Midwest - you can weather most any storm as long as there's plenty of bacon to go 'round.
I'll be back soon with photos and videos.
Perhaps I'll document the stages of hypothermia.
:-)
Stay warm and safe! We're expecting a low of 8 tonight and 3 tomorrow night. Pretty much unheard of for our area...
ReplyDeleteJayme, it's lovely to see your drawings again. There is an older one of you and a hen in the snow that I'd love to use for a Christmas card. (A new occupation for you . . . cards?) Would you mind if I used it? Stay warm and cozy. The soup looks wonderful. We're not quite so cold here in Montana.
ReplyDeleteGirl, you actually make me miss this weather. As I sit here in The Whale with the sun shining at 37 going to 60 today, snow would at least give me a reason to Honker down and spend the day reading........ I just may do that anyway. Looking forward to the stages of hypothermia.
ReplyDeleteYIKES that IS cold!! Here in good ole California it will be 68 today. Yesterday was like a spring day. I really feel for all you people out there that live in frigid cold places. That soup looks delicious. Is the recipe on your blog somewhere?
ReplyDeleteStay warm, Jamie. We just lived through it up here in Ontario, Canada for a week and are so glad to see the tail end of it. It is finally warm enough to venture out again. Take care and enjoy your soup. Hugs, Deb
ReplyDeleteVideo?? *eyes and ears perk up*
ReplyDeleteStay warm and cozy!
ReplyDeleteYour drawings are a delight! There's a business opportunity in there... Stay warm! Pam
ReplyDeleteI live in SE MI and we are expecting about the same...except i hope the temps don't get THAT low!! Wow!! Stew is in the crockpot for tonight...and i don't have to drive today...so all's well here!!
ReplyDeleteRecipe please . . . looks dee-lish! Stay bundled and indoors. Aaron . . . YOU TOO!
ReplyDeleteDunno about you, but Jasper county has an emergency travel only warning out. We tried to go someplace and turned around, and that with my husband driving us in a four wheel drive truck!
ReplyDeleteThis chowder looks delicious! If I only I still consumed dairy. I think I will make it without the cream cheese and cream. It will undoubtedly not be as good but those leeks and bacon are calling my name!
ReplyDeleteYes , recipe please!!!
ReplyDeleteStay warm and enjoy your cozy home! Can't wait to see all your pictures...pressure's on!
ReplyDeleteBacon!!! You betcha!! Stay warm; can't wait to see some wintery pics!!
ReplyDeleteI pray you all will be safe and with no broken pipes. Here in GA its going to be 5 degrees on Monday night so we are taking precautions to take care of the pipes.
ReplyDeleteI so hope your bees and chickens make it. Maybe you can bring the chickens onto your screened porch? Poor little featherd guys.
Yes, Bacon is a cure-all on a cold winter's day/night. Will have to try this.
KEEP WARM!
This is brutal girl! Was thinking of you of course. This crazy Midwest weather and your poor feathered friends. My husband and I were not going anywhere this weekend, since we were both struck by a flu bug. A lot of horrible coughing, queasy stomach and feeling like all our energy had been sucked out of us. My poor son took off to Colorado for his vacation and is now sick out there. Ugh! Its hard when a Momma can't tend to her chicks at any age! Hubs is still going to go to work tomorrow. Not far to travel, Ugh! Oh men! Today was still a lot of cozy, sleeping and light meal and a dose of Downton. Are you watching??

I clicked on Chicken bacon crockpot chowder and like magic the recipe popped up. Sometimes I'm dense.
ReplyDeleteYour drawings are absolutely A-dorable! I agree with another reader that you could print cards and we'd snap those babies up!
ReplyDeleteHave you ever read the book The Children's Blizzard? It details the creation of the U.S. weather service, and how the midwest has some of the most intense weather systems in the world! It was also a very sad tale of a blizzard in January that caught many people off-guard with horrible consequences.
Jaybird, Sharing this crazy cold weather with you and making plenty of soups and stews. The boy child sure is handsome. Take care of them thar chickens and stay warm. Cynthia
ReplyDeleteCold here too. We just bought a tank of oil and at this rate it will not last long. We are wearing layers in the house plus scarves and I have learned to type wearing fingerless gloves. The gloves really help!
